Pineapple Chapel has a story worth telling. Built in the 1950s as a church for plantation worker congregations connected to West Maui’s sugarcane and pineapple industries, it has stood as a gathering place for more than seven decades. Today, the restored 1,500-square-foot chapel welcomes weddings and celebrations with warm wooden floors, bright white walls, ceiling fans, natural light, and a private bridal suite, while still carrying the simplicity and character of its original life. Walk in through the French doors, and the room feels open and full of light. Step outside to the MauÊ»u Terrace, and the Pacific Ocean opens up in front of you.

Why Pineapple Chapel Is a Beautiful Setting for Live Art

Pineapple Chapel offers the kind of setting that translates beautifully into live painting and guest portraits. Its historic character, natural light, and ocean-view grounds give each artwork a strong sense of place without overwhelming the moment.

Historic character with painterly texture
The chapel’s white walls, warm wooden floors, wood ceiling, and soft natural light create a clean, elegant backdrop. The space has enough texture to feel warm and personal, but the minimal decor allows the couple, guests, flowers, and artwork to remain the focus.

Three distinct spaces, three different compositions
Pineapple Chapel gives me several beautiful ways to approach the artwork. The Chapel offers an intimate indoor setting with historic charm and air-conditioned comfort. The Mauʻu Terrace opens toward the Pacific Ocean and Kapalua Golf Course, creating a graceful garden-and-ocean composition. The Makai Lawn offers a larger ocean-view setting with room for tented celebrations and sweeping landscape elements. Each space has its own mood, light, and visual story.

The Mauʻu Terrace feels naturally made for painting
From the terrace, the lawn leads the eye toward the water, giving the painting a strong horizon line and a peaceful sense of depth. With the ocean, golf course, and West Maui Mountains nearby, the composition can feel open, elegant, and unmistakably Kapalua.

A cooler, lush West Maui palette
Kapalua has a different feeling than South Maui. The greens are deeper, the air feels cooler, and the ocean often carries a richer blue tone. For a live wedding painting, that setting can bring a more dramatic, refreshing, and romantic atmosphere to the final piece.
