Oil Portrait Commissions for People, Pets, and Families
I create custom oil portrait commissions that are personal, timeless, and made to last. Whether you want to celebrate a couple, honor your family, remember a beloved pet, or turn a meaningful photo into fine art, I work closely with you to create a portrait that feels warm, natural, and deeply personal.
Each painting is made with care, strong attention to likeness, and an artist’s eye for composition, color, and emotion. My goal is to create a finished piece that feels beautiful in your home now and meaningful for many years to come.

How the Portrait Commission Process Works
1. Consultation
We begin with a conversation about your vision for the portrait, including subject, size, and the feeling you want the final piece to carry. If there are personal details that matter to you, this is the best time to share them.
2. Reference Photos
You are welcome to send high-quality photos for me to work from. I can also help select the strongest image or combine references when needed to create a more natural and thoughtful composition.
3. Quote and Deposit
Once the details are confirmed, I provide the final quote and a 50% deposit invoice to secure your portrait in my schedule.
4. Composition Approval
Before painting begins, I confirm the composition and overall direction with you so everything feels clear and aligned from the start.
5. Painting
I paint each portrait in oil with careful attention to likeness, color harmony, and emotional presence. Most commissions are completed within 4 to 6 weeks, depending on size and complexity.
6. Final Review and Delivery
Once the portrait is complete, I share final images for approval. The remaining balance is due before pickup or shipping, and the finished artwork is packed with care for safe delivery.
Commission Portraits
How Long a Commissioned Portrait Take?
The timeline for a commissioned oil portrait can vary depending on the size, level of detail, number of subjects, and where your project falls in my current booking schedule. In general, the painting process itself may take a few weeks, but the full turnaround is usually longer because oil paintings need proper time for drying, finishing, and safe delivery.
For most commissions, I recommend allowing at least 1 extra week for drying and varnishing and 1 additional week for handling and shipping from Maui to the mainland. If the portrait is larger, more detailed, or part of a busy season with other commissions already booked ahead of yours, the timeline may extend further. This is especially true for heirloom-quality pieces or portraits with multiple people, pets, or more developed backgrounds.
If you need your portrait by a specific date for a wedding, anniversary, birthday, holiday, or special gift, I always recommend sharing that deadline as early as possible. Clear communication helps me let you know what is realistic and whether your timeline can be accommodated. The best way to learn more is to book a consultation, so I can review your vision, discuss your deadline, and give you a more accurate estimate for your specific commission.

Commissioned Portraits Pricing
The cost of your commissioned portrait is primarily determined by the size of the canvas, with the flexibility to choose a larger canvas to fit your vision. You can include any number of subjects (people or pets), and larger canvases allow for more detail and greater visual impact.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have a few questions before getting started? Here are some of the things clients ask most often about custom portrait commissions.
Do I need to pose in person? While sitting for a portrait is a timeless experience, most modern commissions are done using high-quality photographs. This allows for more flexibility and ensures the subject doesn't have to remain still for many hours. If you are on Maui, we can also arrange a photo session to capture the perfect lighting.
Can you paint from a photo? Yes. Most of my commission portraits are created from client-provided reference photos. I can also help you choose the strongest image or combine multiple references when needed to create a more natural final composition.
How long does a portrait commission take? Most commissions take about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the size, complexity, and number of subjects. Larger or more detailed pieces may take longer.
Do you require a deposit? Yes. A 50% deposit is required to reserve your commission in my schedule. The remaining balance is due before pickup or shipping.
Do you paint pets? Yes. Pet portraits are available, and I can also create portraits that include both people and pets.
Can you combine multiple photos into one portrait? Yes. When needed, I can combine elements from more than one reference photo to create a stronger composition, especially for family portraits, memorial pieces, or portraits where everyone is not photographed together.
Do you ship finished portraits? Yes. Completed paintings can be carefully packed and shipped. Shipping costs vary depending on the size of the artwork and the delivery location.
Can you help me choose the right size? Yes. If you are unsure which size would work best, I can guide you based on the subject, composition, and where the painting will be displayed.
What happens after I inquire? Once I receive your inquiry, I’ll review your ideas, reference photos, and preferred size, then send you a quote and the next steps to begin the commission process.
Can I commission a portrait as a gift? Yes. A custom portrait makes a meaningful gift for anniversaries, birthdays, weddings, memorials, and family milestones.
Do you ship outside of Hawaii? Absolutely. I regularly ship finished artworks to the mainland and internationally. I take great care in professional crating and or rolling (for larger canvases) to ensure your investment arrives in pristine condition.
What materials do you use? I use professional-grade, archival oil paints and high-quality linen or heavy-duty cotton canvas. This ensures that your portrait remains vibrant and structurally sound for generations.
Why Commission a Portrait? A commissioned portrait is more than just a painting; it’s a way to preserve a moment in time, celebrate a special bond, or honor the personality of those closest to you. Whether you're marking a milestone, gifting someone you love, or creating a centerpiece for your home, a custom portrait brings warmth, emotion, and artistic expression into any space.
Why Choose an Oil Portrait?
Oil paintings are known for their rich texture, depth, and longevity. These timeless pieces are ideal for family heirlooms, gifts, or personal keepsakes.
Custom Options and Flexibility
No matter the occasion, the number of subjects, or the size of the canvas, your portrait can be tailored to your exact preferences. Whether you want a single portrait, a couple's portrait, or a large family group, you can choose a canvas size that fits your vision and space.
