Can I Have Live Guest Portraits and a Live Wedding Painting at the Same Wedding?

Yes - live guest portraits and a live wedding painting can be done together at the same wedding with some planning.

Because I am a one-artist studio, the timeline needs to be coordinated carefully, especially for weddings with larger guest counts. The best experience usually combines live painting during the event, guest portraits during cocktail hour or reception, optional VIP portraits completed before the wedding, and any remaining portraits completed afterward if needed.

With the right timeline, a clear photo capture system, and optional non-artist assistant support, both services can feel smooth, beautiful, and organized for the couple and their guests.

How does the combined service usually work?

Every wedding is different, but a successful combined service may include:

  • A live wedding painting created on-site during the event

  • Live guest portraits during cocktail hour and/or reception

  • A photo capture system for guest portrait references

  • Optional VIP guest portraits completed before the wedding

  • Optional remaining portraits completed after the wedding

  • A non-artist assistant to help with guest flow and organization

This structure helps balance the couple’s finished heirloom painting with a memorable guest experience.

Are live wedding paintings finished during the event?

The live wedding painting is brought very close to completion during the wedding, then refined afterward in the studio.

During the event, guests can watch the painting develop live. After the wedding, I refine details such as facial likeness, hands, clothing, edges, lighting, and overall polish. This studio refinement helps the final painting feel complete as a lasting keepsake.

How do guest portraits work when both services are booked?

For guest portraits, I can use a photo capture system so guests do not need to sit for the full painting time.

Guests can have their photo taken, return to the celebration, and pick up their portrait later. This keeps the experience relaxed, avoids long lines, and gives me more flexibility while balancing both the live wedding painting and guest portraits.

For larger weddings, I often recommend completing some VIP portraits before the event from submitted photos. These may include parents, wedding party members, close family, or special guests.

Do you offer multiple artists?

I do not currently offer additional artists.

However, I can include a non-artist assistant to help with:

  • Guest flow

  • Photo capture

  • Organizing portrait references

  • Displaying finished portraits

  • Helping guests understand the process

  • Keeping the station smooth and presentable

The assistant does not paint, but their support can make the experience feel much more organized, especially when both services are happening at the same event.

What size live wedding painting do you recommend when combining both services?

For a combined live wedding painting and guest portrait experience, I usually recommend keeping the live wedding painting no larger than 24x30.

A 20x20 canvas is a very practical size for many weddings because it gives the couple a beautiful finished painting while still allowing enough time and attention for guest portraits.

Larger paintings can be done, but they require more planning, more preparation, and a carefully structured timeline.

What would you recommend for a 60-guest wedding?

For a wedding with approximately 60 guests, a strong combined option could be:

Live Wedding Painting
20x20 canvas, created live on-site and refined afterward in the studio.

Live Guest Portraits - Watercolor
4 hours of live guest portraits, with an estimated range of approximately 30-40 portraits depending on guest flow, timing, and whether portraits are mostly singles or couples.

Additional Portraits
Approximately 12 VIP portraits completed before the event and approximately 12 remaining portraits completed after the wedding, if a fuller guest portrait experience is desired.

This structure helps create a balanced experience without rushing the live artwork.

What is an example estimate for live guest portraits and a live wedding painting together?

For a 60-guest wedding, one example estimate could be:

ServiceExample

Live Wedding Painting, 20x20 canvas$2,100

Live Guest Portraits - Watercolor, 4 hours$1,900

24 additional portraits at $30 per face$720

Estimated Combined Total$4,720

This is only an example. Final recommendations may change depending on the wedding schedule, venue layout, ceremony time, cocktail hour, reception flow, guest count, and the couple’s priorities.

Can you share an example of how this worked at a real wedding?

Yes. At a Hotel Wailea wedding, I created a live wedding painting and live guest portraits during the same event.

For that wedding, the bride sent photos of some guests ahead of time. Several VIP portraits were completed before the wedding, which made the portrait table look full and welcoming from the beginning. I also used a photo capture system to organize guest references and keep the experience moving during the reception.

I visited the venue before the event to photograph the ceremony area and prepare the composition. On the wedding day, I arrived early, started the painting background, photographed the couple during first look, painted the couple into the live wedding painting, focused on guest portraits during the reception, and returned to the painting later in the evening to refine the couple’s likeness and details.

That structure worked well because the day was supported with preparation, photo references, and a clear timeline.

What is the best timeline for combining both services?

A combined service timeline depends on the wedding day, but a possible flow could look like this:

Before the wedding
VIP guest portraits are created from submitted photos. Background sketches or composition planning may also be prepared.

Early setup
I arrive early to set up the live wedding painting easel, guest portrait station, photo capture area, and display table.

Before ceremony or early reception setup
I begin the live wedding painting background and composition.

First look or ceremony reference
I take reference photos of the couple, ceremony area, florals, and important visual details.

Cocktail hour and reception
I create live guest portraits and continue working from guest reference photos.

Later reception
I return to the live wedding painting to refine the couple, add details, and bring the piece closer to its final live stage.

After the event
The live wedding painting is refined in the studio, and any remaining guest portraits can be completed if included in the package.

Is this better for cocktail hour, dinner reception, or the full event?

For combined services, cocktail hour through dinner reception usually works best for guest portraits.

The live wedding painting may begin earlier in the day, especially if I am painting the ceremony background, venue setting, or reception space before guests arrive. This gives me time to build the composition before switching attention to guest portraits during the celebration.

A full timeline review is the best way to decide how to divide the painting time.

Will guests need to sit for their portraits?

Not necessarily. With a photo capture system, guests can quickly have their photo taken and return to the wedding.

This keeps the experience relaxed and avoids creating a long line. It also gives me better flexibility when balancing both the guest portrait work and the live wedding painting.

What are the advantages of adding VIP portraits before the wedding?

VIP portraits completed before the wedding help in several ways:

  • More guests can receive portraits

  • The live event feels less rushed

  • Important family members and wedding party members are prioritized

  • The portrait table looks beautiful from the beginning

  • The couple can include loved ones who may be busy during the reception

  • The overall experience feels more complete and polished

For weddings with around 60 guests, I often recommend 10-20 VIP portraits before the event when combining guest portraits with a live wedding painting.

Can the remaining portraits be completed after the wedding?

Yes. If there are remaining guest portraits that cannot be completed live during the event, they can be completed afterward from captured guest photos if that option is included.

This is helpful for couples who want a more complete guest portrait experience while also including a live wedding painting on the same wedding day.

What information do you need to plan both services?

To recommend the best plan, I usually need:

  • Wedding date

  • Venue

  • Guest count

  • Ceremony time

  • Cocktail hour time

  • Reception timeline

  • First look timing, if applicable

  • Desired live wedding painting moment

  • Preferred canvas size

  • Guest portrait medium

  • Whether VIP portraits are desired before the event

  • Whether remaining portraits after the event should be included

  • Planner or venue contact for setup coordination

Once I have the wedding details, I can help create a realistic plan that works with the flow of the day.
